A&M Looking to Privatize Easterwood Airport

Easterwood Airport is on the way to becoming privately managed and operated.

The university is collecting requests for qualifications (RFQ). After next Friday’s deadline, Vice President for Marketing and Communication Jason Cook says the decision will be made whether to issue requests for proposals (RFP).

One firm would provide aviation services as the fixed based operator (FBO), and a second would manage the airport. Each would have a five year agreement with an option for another five years.

A&M is looking for a FBO with prior experience at a commercial airport and has the financial capability to invest in Easterwood’s facilities and equipment.

Private companies interested in managing Easterwood are supposed to tell A&M what they see are challenges to the airport’s growth and success and opportunities that should be pursued.

According to FAA financial documents included in A&M’s management RFQ, Easterwood had a net operating loss each of the last two fiscal years, in FY 2010 was $1,375,612 and in FY 2011 was $1,737,776. However, the airport operated in the black both years when FAA grant depreciation is subtracted from the overall total.
