A&M Hosting 7-on-7 Football in 2012 Then Moving Off-Campus

It’s a big attraction for Bryan/College Station. For years, high school football players have participated in 7-on-7 tournaments at Texas A&M University.

Athletics Director Bill Byrne told those attending the Chamber of Commerce economic outlook conference this will be the last year of games on-campus.

Byrne says they received a waiver for 2012 from the Southeastern Conference, which has a ban on that activity.  Byrne says they expect to also receive a waiver from the NCAA, also for 2012.

Byrne says they’re working to have the tournament at off-campus sites starting in 2013.

In 2011, Byrne says there were 4,000 participants in the 7-on-7 tournament, most who came from out of town.

7-on-7 was one example of youth sports at A&M. Byrne says an indoor track meet earlier this month brought 1,000 high school participants to town. And 5,000 youth soccer players were on campus last summer.

Comments from Bill Byrne.

According to the website state7on7.com, the dates for the 2012 state tournament are July 14 through 16.
