TORONTO – Texas A&M graduate Simone Facey earned a bronze medal in the final of the 200 meters at the Pan American Games on Friday while Aggie junior Latario Collie tied for 10th place in the triple jump at York University.
Facey ran 22.74 (1.1 wind) in finishing behind the American pair of Kaylin Whitney, who won with a 22.65 clocking, and Florida’s Kyra Jefferson, runner-up at 22.72. In fourth place with a 22.88 was Ecuador’s Angela Tenorio.
Collie’s best effort in the triple jump measured 52-9 ¼ (16.08), which limited him to just three attempts when the field of 14 was trimmed to eight for the final three rounds. Columbia’s Jhon Murillo matched Collie for 10th place as both had the same back-up mark of 50-10 ¼ (15.50).
Facey later anchored Jamaica’s 4×100 relay to a semifinal victory in a time of 42.82 to reach Saturday’s final. Runner-up to Jamaica in the semifinal was Canada (42.98) with Brazil third (43.24). The United States won the other semifinal heat in 43.07 ahead of the Bahamas (44.34) and Cuba (44.58).
In the 4×400 semifinal, A&M sophomore Shamier Little ran the opening leg as the United States cruised to a 3:26.40 victory over Jamaica (3:30.29) and Canada (3:30.61). Aggie grad Janeil Bellille ran the first leg for Trinidad & Tobago, who placed fourth in 3:31.21 and did not advance to the final on time.
Saturday’s finals will include the women’s 4×100 at 6:40 p.m. (CT) while the women’s 4×400 will be at 8:45 p.m.
