Alex Makes Landfall, Downgraded to Category 1

MIAMI (AP) _ The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Alex has weakened from a Category 2 to a Category 1 storm as it moves inland over northeastern Mexico.

The hurricane center reported early Thursday that the storm had sustained winds of 85 miles per hour. It says Alex is expected to weaken as it moves further inland.

The hurricane had been moving northwest at about 10 miles per hour and at 1 a.m. Central time was located about 35 miles northwest of La Pesca, Mexico, and 135 miles south-southwest of Brownsville, Texas.

The storm made landfall at about 9 p.m. Central time Wednesday at Soto La Marina, Mexico.
