Airbnb announces revenue generated by guests staying in Brazos County homes during this year’s Texas A&M home football weekends almost doubled from last year.
There were seven Aggie home football games in 2019 and 2018. Last year, Airbnb reported Brazos County homeowners made $963,000 dollars. This year, the collective total was more than $1.7 million.
Last year, 8,500 people stayed in Brazos County homes. This year, occupancy topped 11,000.
Airbnb did not disclose the number of Brazos County properties. But the company announced $850,000 of the $1.7 million that was generated this year came from homes in College Station.
Brazos County Airbnb homeowners collected more than $375,000 dollars during the Alabama game weekend, followed by South Carolina at more than $338,000.
Two more of this year’s home games exceeded last year’s busiest weekend, which was Clemson at $238,000. Third on this year’s list was Mississippi State at more than $292,000, followed by Auburn at $253,000 dollars.
Airbnb sent to the state, approximately $102,000 dollars in hotel occupancy tax money from Brazos County homeowners. That’s based on multiplying the state’s six percent HOT tax by Airbnb’s revenue number.
The short term rental company does not have similar agreements with the cities of College Station and Bryan or with Brazos County. Homeowners are responsible for charging and collecting local hotel taxes…which are seven percent in the cities and two and a half percent in Brazos County.
The city of College Station reported collecting $68,000 dollars in HOT tax money from all short term rentals during the fiscal year that ended September 30th. That’s up from $53,000 the year before.
