Ag’s Open Exhibition Season with a Win

COLLEGE STATION – Led by a balanced scoring attack that featured four players with double-figure points, the Texas A&M men’s basketball team notched an 80-70 exhibition victory over Texas-Permian Basin Wednesday night at Reed Arena.

Senior guard Fabyon Harris paced the Aggies with 13 points on the night, while adding five rebounds and a pair of steals. The Chicago, Ill., native was joined in double-digit scoring by junior guard Jamal Jones, who chipped in 11 points along with six rebounds.

Additionally, sophomore guard Alex Caruso and freshman forward Davonte Fitzgerald each tallied 10 points in the winning effort.

“I think tonight we saw more athletic plays of guys attacking the rim and getting deflections and steals with our athleticism,” Texas A&M head coach Billy Kennedy said. “We just have to try to get a little bit better every day and mature as fast as possible.”

The Aggies were active in transition during the contest, outscoring the Falcons by a 20-2 margin in fast break points, while also dominating in the interior where they held a 58-28 edge in points in the paint.

For the game, the Aggies shot 32-of-66 (48.5 percent) from the floor and were aggressive on the defensive end, collecting 12 steals and eight blocks as a team.

During his first action on the court for Texas A&M after sitting out last season following his transfer from Florida State, sophomore Antwan Space led the Aggies with eight boards to go along with nine points, a block and a steal.

Junior guard Jordan Green tallied six points and five rebounds in addition to leading the Aggies with four assists.

UTPB’s Keith Martin notched a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards, while teammate Anthony Dees paced all scorers with 18 points.

Early in the contest it was an 11-0 Aggie run which gave the home squad control of the game and a 23-14 lead with 10:15 to play in the opening period.

The Aggies owned a 41-30 advantage at the intermission, shooting 47 percent from the floor during the first half.

The Aggies will officially christen their 2013-14 campaign on Friday, Nov. 8, when they welcome Buffalo to Reed Arena.
