Ags lose fifth straight midweeker; UTSA wins 3-2

The No. 9 Texas A&M baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision to UTSA in 10 innings Tuesday night at Wolff Stadium.

The loss dropped the Aggies’ overall record to 30-15, while UTSA improved to 22-24.

The Roadrunners struck first in the contest, scoring a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by center fielder Daniel Rockett.

The run would be the only tally against the ledger of Texas A&M’s Derrick Hadley, who was making his first career start for the maroon and white. The freshman from Navasota, Texas, got a no-decision after tossing 5.1 innings and notching six strikeouts.

Sophomore right fielder Tyler Naquin extended his career-best hitting streak to 21 games during the top of the sixth as he collected an infield single to score fellow outfielder Brandon Wood and tie the game at 1-1.

Naquin’s hitting streak is longest in the Big 12 this season and the seventh longest ever by an Aggie, tying a similar 21-game run by Ben Feltner in 2007.

UTSA starter Michael Kraft held the Aggie offense in check as he tossed seven innings and struck out a career high 12.

The Aggies took their first lead of the night in the top of the eighth as back-to-back singles from Wood and Kenny Jackson gave A&M a pair of base runners. Senior Andrew Collazo converted the opportunity as he scored Wood on a safety squeeze to put the Aggies up 2-1.

The game went into extra innings after the Roadrunners were able to tie the game at 2-2 with a one-out RBI single by Ryan Dalton in the bottom of the ninth.

After the Aggies could not push across a run in the top of the 10th, UTSA got a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning off Texas A&M reliever Dylan Mendoza (2-2). After a fielder’s choice and a stolen base put the winning run in scoring position, UTSA second baseman Matthew James sent the Roadrunner fans home happy with an RBI single into center field.

The Aggies return to action at Olsen Field on Thursday as they begin a three-game series with Dallas Baptist.
