Ag’s Drop SEC Opener

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP)– Ricky Tarrant scored 15 points and Retin Obasohan sparked a decisive second-half run to lead Alabama to a 65-44 victory over Texas A&M on Tuesday night.

The Crimson Tide (11-3, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) won its fifth consecutive game in the league opener for both teams.

The Aggies (9-4, 0-1) repeatedly chipped away at double-digit deficits but never led in the game.

Obasohan scored all 12 of his points in the final 10 minutes to help the Tide secure its fifth straight win in SEC home openers.

Levi Randolph and Michael Kessens each had 10 points and nine rebounds for Alabama.

Freshman Peyton Allen led Texas A&M with 13 points while leading scorer Jalen Jones sat out with a sprained ankle. Alex Caruso had six assists.

The Aggies tied the game early in the second half but Alabama took control from that point.

● Texas A&M fell to 9-4 and 0-1 in the SEC with a 65-44 road loss to Alabama at Coleman Coliseum Tuesday night.

● The all-time series between the schools now stands at 8-4 in favor of the Crimson Tide.

TEAM NOTES

● The Aggies hit five of their last six shots during the first half to close the period on a 12-2 run but Alabama owned a 27-24 lead at the intermission.

● After trailing by as many as 13 in the first half, A&M tied the game during the second period’s opening minute on a 3-point basket from Danuel House … overall, however, Alabama outscored A&M 38-20 after halftime.

● Texas A&M used the starting line-up combination of Alex Caruso, Jordan Green, Danuel House, Antwan Space and Kourtney Roberson for the first time this season (0-1).

INDIVIDUAL NOTES

● Freshman guard Peyton Allen led the offensive charge for the Aggies with 13 points off the bench.

● SEC assist-leader Alex Caruso dished out a game-high six assists in the contest, giving him 365 for his three-year A&M career.

● Texas A&M played without leading scorer as junior forward Jalen Jones missed the game with a sprained ankle … he’s listed as say-to-day.

● A&M head coach Billy Kennedy is now 59-53 in his fourth season at Texas A&M and 270-232 in 17 years as a head coach.
