News release from AgriLife Extension:

The annual Texas State 4-H Horse Show, which has been held at the Taylor County Exposition in Abilene for the past 35 years, will now be held at the Brazos County Expo Center in Bryan for the next five years.

The Brazos County Expo Center won the bid to host the state show from 2019-2023. The first show at the new venue will be July 21-27, 2019.

The move was the result of a competitive bidding process, said Dr. Parr Rosson, interim director of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, the educational outreach agency of the Texas A&M University System administering the Texas 4-H Youth Development Program.

“The city of Abilene and the Taylor County Exposition have graciously hosted the show for the past 35 years,” Rosson said. “We deeply appreciate their efforts and the hospitality they have shown.”

News release from Brazos County:

Brazos County Expo General Manager Carl Kolbe says this is a great boost for the Expo Complex and for the local economy.

“Thanks to the recent Expo expansion, which was completed in 2017, we were able to competitively bid for the State 4-H Horse Show this year. That expansion gives us the flexibility to provide two covered arenas, one covered warm-up area, plus three stall barns with up to 750 stalls. One of those stall barns is multi-use and can be converted to either stalls, a warm-up area or an arena. That space, and ability to be flexible with the way the spaces are used, will allow us to comfortably host a show of this magnitude, plus many others in the future. Bringing in these kids, their families, and county extension agents from across the state will provide an added revenue source for our local hotels and restaurants as well,” says Kolbe.

The State 4-H Horse Show has been held in Abilene for the past 35 years. In 2017, the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau estimated an economic impact of almost $900,000 from the show. More than 350 4-H youth participated in the 2017 event, traveling with their parents, for a hotel occupancy of 1416 room nights.

The show will take place during off-peak patterns of tourism and travel for the Bryan / College Station area. The five-year contract will span the summers of 2019 – 2023, and hopefully further into the future.
