AUSTIN – Competing in the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays this week, Texas A&M will contest 11 relays, 27 individual events and one multi-event. Action begins Wednesday at Mike A. Myers Stadium and will conclude Saturday evening.
This marks the second consecutive week of the outdoor season with the Aggies competing in Texas. The A&M men, defending NCAA Outdoor champions, and the Aggie women, the NCAA Outdoor runner-up in 2013, placed first and second, respectively, in San Antonio this past weekend at the UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational.
The No. 3 ranked Aggie men, who were named the outstanding team of the Texas Relays in 2013, return as defending champions in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays. The No. 1 ranked A&M women will defend its title in the 4×100, where they equaled the meet record of 42.56 a year ago, while Shelbi Vaughan defends her discus title.
In addition to the relays A&M will have athletes in 10 individual running events and 17 field events over the four-day meet.
Jena Hemann will be the first Aggie in competition on Wednesday in the heptathlon, which begins at 10:30 a.m. and continues at 11 a.m. on Thursday. Hemann has set career best scores the past two years at the Texas Relays, placing eighth as a freshman with 5,300 points and finishing fourth in her sophomore season with 5,531 points.
Following the Texas Relays, Hemann has placed fifth in the heptathlon in conference meets the past two years at the 2012 Big 12 meet and 2013 SEC Championships. Last season she also placed 16th at the NCAA Championships.
Thursday competition for A&M will include the prelims of the 400 hurdles, the men’s 4×800 relay, the 1500 meters, 3000m steeplechase and 5000 meters.
Running in the prelims of the 400 hurdles, where the top nine qualifiers advance to the final, are Greg Coleman, Aikan Graham, Kenneth Minkah and Jessica Laseak. Coleman made the final last season, placing sixth. Dylan Williams competes in the steeplechase while the 5000 meters will include Karis Jochen and Gabby Salazar in the women’s race along with Ryan Miller and Austin Wells in the men’s race.
In Thursday field events Casey Strong is in the men’s hammer while the women’s B division javelin will include Krystyn Bradley and Jean Deason.
Friday features a full day of action with Aggies in competition from 9:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. at night. Prelims during the day include the 4×100 relays, 100 & 110 hurdles, and 100 meters. Finals will be held in the 400 hurdles, sprint medley and distance medley relays.
Wayne Davis II and Shamier Little represent A&M in the hurdles while a crew of Aggie sprinters run in the 100 meters. For the women the group includes Aaliyah Brown, Ashley Collier, India Daniels and Ashton Purvis. The Aggie men will have a trio of Michael Bryan, Jermaine Davis and Prezel Hardy, Jr.
Field events on Friday have LaQue Moen-Davis competing in both the long jump and triple jump. Moen-Davis finished as runner-up in the triple jump last season. The A division of the javelin has Kendall Munoz in the women’s field and Devin Bogert in the men’s field. Bogert placed fourth a year ago with a 236-4 effort.
Vaughan is in the A division of the discus, where she won the 2013 title with a toss of 183-9, and Brea Garrett is in the A division of the shot put.
Chase Wolfle, who placed third at the SEC Indoor meet and tied for 11th at the NCAA Indoor Championships, will be in the Invitational field of the pole vault on Friday, starting at 5:30 p.m. Last season Wolfle placed second in the B division of the pole vault with a season best effort of 17-9.
The elite pole vault field includes 10 finalists from the recent NCAA Indoor meet. Headlining the event is NCAA Indoor champion Shawn Barber of Akron, as well as Andrew Irwin of Arkansas, the 2013 NCAA Outdoor and 2014 NCAA Indoor fourth place finisher.
Field events on Friday with Aggies in the B division include Brittany Wooten in the women’s pole vault, Jennifer Madu in the women’s long jump, Olabanji Asekun in the men’s long jump, Kara Erickson and Sierra Patrick in the women’s high jump, Melissa Mays and Jordan Wilson in the women’s triple jump, Jeffrey Prothro in the men’s triple jump and Devion Harris in the men’s high jump.
Saturday’s collegiate action for A&M will begin at noon with the 4×200 relays and wrap up around 5 p.m. with the 4×400 relays. In between those two relay events the Aggies may also have finalists in the 4×100, 100 & 110 hurdles, and 100 meters. The lone field event involving A&M on the final day will have Dalton Rowan in the men’s discus while Madu is entered in the women’s 100m Invitational.
Rowan has placed eighth the past two years in the discus, producing marks of 186-1 in 2012 and 191-9 in 2013. This year’s discus field at the Texas Relays includes UCLA’s Julian Wruck, the defending NCAA champion and collegiate record holder, as well as Nebraska’s Chad Wright, the 2013 NCAA runner-up. Also in the field are NCAA third and fourth place finishers from a year ago in Kentucky’s Andrew Evans and Rodney Brown of LSU.
This is the first year the women will have a University Invitational section of the 4×400 without having to run a prelim race first. Joining the Aggies in the nine-team final are Arkansas, Baylor, Clemson, Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Texas and Texas Tech.
The men’s University Invitational 4×400 will feature eight teams. In addition to Texas A&M, the collegiate record holder indoors, the field will include Baylor, Florida, LSU, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Texas and Texas Tech.
