Aggies Lose Series Finale at Fresno State, 1-0

FRESNO, California – The Texas A&M Aggies were unable to scratch out a win in their series finale at Fresno State, falling to the Bulldogs, 1-0, at Beiden Field on Sunday afternoon.

Fresno State (9-2) scored the game’s lone run in the ninth inning. Jordan Luplow reached on a leadoff single when a charging Logan Taylor was unable to glove the slow roller to shortstop. AJ Minter came in to relieve Andrew Vinson and retired Luplow at second on a fielder’s choice by Trent Woodward. Woodward stole second base, but Kevin Viers struck out for the second out of the inning. Jason Jester came in to face Taylor Ward and Ward plated the game-winning run with a single to the gap in right centerfield.

The starting pitcher did not factor into the decision for either team. Grayson Long worked 5.1 scoreless innings, scattering four hits and one walk while striking out three for the Aggies. The sophomore has not allowed a run in 19.1 innings of work in 2014. Tim Borst held Texas A&M to three hits while striking out 11 over 8.0 blank frames for Fresno State.

Andrew Vinson (0-1) was saddled with the loss despite a stellar outing in relief. He allowed one run on one hit, but struck out four of the seven batters he faced in 2.0 innings. Matt Kent and AJ Minter also performed well in relief. Kent struck out both batters he faced with a runner on third and one out. Minter retired both batters he faced in the ninth.

Jake Shull (1-0) earned the win in relief. He walked one batter, but he struck out three in the ninth.

Texas A&M (7-4) managed just three hits, with Nick Banks, Logan Nottebrok and Troy Stein each logging one apiece.

Ward logged three of Fresno State’s six hits, going 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

Texas A&M returns to action on Tuesday as the Aggies travel to Arlington’s Global Life Park (formerly Rangers Ballpark) for a 7 pm game against the UTA Mavericks.
