Aggies Excel at Central American and Caribbean Games

Seven current and former Texas A&M swimmers captured 23 medals while competing for Mexico and Jamaica at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Mauro CastilloEsther GonzalezMateo Gonzalez, Monica Gonzalez-Hermosillo, Liliana Ibanez and Angel Martinez represented Mexico, while Alia Atkinson competed for Jamaica.

Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving head coach Jay Holmes served as an assistant coach for the Mexican team.

Alia Atkinson

  • Accounted for all five Jamaican medals
  • Won gold in the 50 fly (26.60), 50 breast (30.19) and 100 breast (1.06.83)
  • Took bronze in the 50 free (25.47)

Mauro Castillo

  • Earned the gold medal in the mixed medley relay (3.49.61) and 400 medley relay (3:40.41)
  • Awarded silver in the 50 breast (27.92), 100 breast (1:00.77) and 200 breast (2:12.31)

Esther Gonzalez

  • Took silver in the 200 breast (2:29.72) and 200 IM (2:16.69)
  • Finished third in the 100 breast (1:10.60)

Mateo Gonzalez

  • Swam in the prelims of a gold medal-winning relay
  • Finished fourth in the 100 fly (53.07)

Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo

  • Won gold in the 200 IM (2:16.27, Championship record), 4×100 free relay (3:47.07), 4×100 mixed free relay (3:31.66) and 4×200 free relay (8:12.30)
  • Placed third in the 400 IM (4:52.13)

Liliana Ibanez

  • Was a member of every Mexican relay team
  • Earned a medal in every individual event she entered
  • Captured gold in the 4×100 free relay (3:47.07), 4×100 mixed free relay (3:31.66), mixed medley relay (3:49.61), 4×200 free relay (8:12.30), 400 medley relay (4:08.99)
  • Won a silver in the 50 free (25.15) and bronze in the 50 fly (27.08) and 200 free (2:01.36)

Angel Martinez

  • Earned a silver medal in the 4×200 free relay (8:12.30)
