COLLEGE STATION, Texas – For the second consecutive match, Texas A&M came back from the brink of defeat to win in five sets. This time the Aggies, who once again dropped the opening two sets, fought off three match points in the fourth set to defeat No. 22 Oklahoma, 22-25, 19-25, 25-17, 29-27, 15-11, in front of 1,720 at Reed Arena.
A&M junior middle blocker Lindsey Miller was nearly unstoppable, tallying a career-high and team season-high 23 kills while hitting at a .455 clip to lead the Aggies, who remain undefeated at home (7-0) and improve to 15-4 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12.
The Sooners fall to 17-5, including 4-2 in the Big 12.
On Saturday, the Aggies dropped the first two sets at Kansas but fought off a match point in the third set and came back to defeat the Jayhawks in five sets. Prior to that match, the last time A&M had come back from a two-set deficit to win was in 2002. Tonight marked the first time the Aggies came back from a 2-0 deficit against a ranked opponent since defeating No. 23 Baylor on Nov. 10, 1999, at G. Rollie White Coliseum.
“To do this two times in a row, we’ve resolved that it says two things about us,” A&M coach Laurie Corbelli said. “No. 1, that we’re a great comeback team, thank goodness. And two, we recognize that we have to continue to work on stronger starts, period. I think that’s obvious to Reed Arena and the nation. Every team has characteristics, and that happens to be ours right now. But coming back and being able to come back with those kind of shifts of momentum is great.”
The Sooners led for the majority of the first set, building their largest lead at 13-6. A&M, which was outhit .244 to .100 in the frame, chipped away and went on a late 3-0 run to take its first lead at 22-20. It would be the final points for A&M, as OU closed out the set with five consecutive points, including back-to-back kills by Suzy Boulavsky to clinch the set.
OU dominated the second set, outhitting A&M .281 to .048 en route to the 25-19 win, but it was the Aggies who had the hot hand in the third set. Three consecutive kills by Miller gave A&M the lead for good at 7-6. The teams then traded sideouts, and the score was tied three times before Miller, who had seven kills in the set, posted two more kills during a 4-0 run to put A&M ahead, 15-10. OU stayed within 19-16 before Tori Mellinger got a kill down the block and then served an ace to spark another 4-0 rally for the Aggies. Sallie McLaurin end the run with a kill, but Alisia Kastmo countered with her fourth kill of the set to put the Aggies at set point. Oklahoma, which was outhit, .382 to .200, hit wide on the next play to end the set.
“The first two games we weren’t in our rhythm and there was a lot of stress on the court,” Miller said. “One thing we have going for us is our persistence, and we know that if we can get going we can do it.”
The Sooners jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the fourth set before A&M rallied once again. A&M tied the score four times before taking its first lead at 20-19 on a kill by Kelsey Black. An OU attack error put A&M ahead 21-19, but the Sooners went on a 5-1 run and were serving for the match at 24-22. Kastmo posted one of her six kills in the set to keep the Aggies alive, and A&M’s Elise Hendrickson came away with a kill following a series of furious jousts at the net to knot the score at 24-24. McLaurin came back with a kill to put the Sooners at match point for the third time, but Kastmo answered, tipping the ball in for a kill. Miller then posted a solo block to give the Aggies the lead at 26-25. OU tied the score at 26 and 27 before Miller teamed with Black for one of her team-leading seven blocks to give the Aggies a 28-27 advantage. Mellinger followed with a kill to even the match at 2-2 and force a fifth set for the fifth time in the last nine meetings between the two teams.
The Sooners held a 5-4 lead in the final frame before Miller and Mellinger posted a block and Mellinger followed with a kill down the line. OU knotted the score at 6- and 7-all but was unable to regain the lead. A serve into the net and an attack error put A&M up, 9-7. OU got back within a point at 9-8 and 10-9 before Miller notched two kills during a 3-0 A&M rally to give the Aggies a 13-9 advantage. The teams then exchanged kills for the remainder of the match, with Miller appropriately getting the match-winning kill.
Miller, who set a career-high in kills for the second consecutive match, was sure to praise her setter, Allie Sawatzky, who finished with a career high 60 assists.
“She did excellent tonight,” Miller said. “Great setting, great distribution and even attacking, she made sure they were on their toes, taking swings and getting good attempts. So she played really well.
“We’ve really been working on the connection and knowing that my setter trusts me and I trust her and the sets have been on the money. It’s definitely been a confidence boost to know we have that connection, and even the passing, the passing has been phenomenal in the middle.”
Kastmo also had a career performance with a personal-best 18 kills. Black, who surpassed 1,000 career points, and Hendrickson also finished in double figures with 10 kills apiece as A&M led OU in kills, 71-59.
Megan Pendergast led a group of five A&M players to post double figures in digs with 16. Mellinger contributed 15 digs, and Sarah Grace pitched in a career-high 13. Black and Sawatzky added 12 and 10, respectively, to help lead A&M to an 80-76 advantage in digs.
Boulavsky had 16 kills to lead the Sooners, who outhit A&M, .201 to .187. McLaurin had 13 kills and also had nine blocks as OU posted 15 team blocks, the most by an A&M opponent this season.
Texas A&M has a bye this weekend and resumes Big 12 play at Texas Tech on Wednesday, Oct. 19. First serve against the Red Raiders is at 6:30 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena.
