Aggie Volleyball Drops Five-Set Battle at LSU, 3-2

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

BATON ROUGE – The Texas A&M volleyball team fell just short in a five-set battle with LSU Sunday afternoon at the Maravich Assembly Center, 3-2 (18-25, 25-14, 25-20, 14-25, 15-10).

Texas A&M (12-3, 3-2 SEC) dropped its third match of the season in a down-to-the-wire five-set contest with LSU (11-6, 3-3 SEC). The Aggies landed their blows in the first and fourth frames, however their late rally came up five-points shy.

The Aggies opened the match as the aggressor, racing out to a three-point lead early, 10-7. A&M kept pushing to hold a six-point advantage at the media timeout, 15-9. The momentum stayed on the Maroon & White’s side, as a block followed by three kills forced the Tigers to burn their first timeout of the match (19-13). Piling on the pressure was Logan Lednicky, logging back-to-back kills to bring her first set total to five as LSU called its final break (22-13). The Aggies held their rhythm and closed out the opener (25-18) to lead in the match, 1-0.

Responding in the second was LSU, as it forged a five-point advantage as head coach Jamie Morrison called his first timeout, 12-7. The Tigers built on their lead and tied the match (25-14), 1-1.

Back-and-forth volleyball started the third, as the teams were tied on eight occasions prior to the media timeout where LSU led by two, 15-13. The Tigers continued to build on the gap, taking the set (25-20) to lead in the match, 2-1.

Needing to respond in the fourth, the Aggies did just that as they jumped out to a 15-8 lead. A&M sustained its momentum behind a pair of kills from Taylor Humphrey and a block from Emily Hellmuth and Morgan Perkins as LSU called timeout, 18-10. The onslaught continued as the Maroon & White won the frame (25-14) sending the teams to a fifth-set decider, 2-2.

LSU pushed out to an early lead in the fifth set, prompting coach Morrison to use his pair of timeouts (12-6). Despite a late push from A&M, the Tigers closed the set (15-10) and match, 3-2.
