Aggie Softball Falls to Auburn at SEC Tournament

News release from Texas A&M Athletics: 

No. 6 seed Texas A&M softball erased a five-run deficit but could not complete the comeback, falling to No. 14 Auburn, 11-8, in the second round of the SEC Tournament Wednesday morning at John Cropp Stadium.

Texas A&M (36-17) scored five unanswered runs between the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game, 8-8, before Auburn (27-27) reclaimed the lead with a three-run home run in the seventh. The Aggies surrendered a season-high five home runs, including three with two outs, as Auburn scored nine of its 11 runs with two away.

Micaela Wark went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and three RBI. Mya Perez added a two-run home run and scored twice, while Ariel Kowalewski drove in two runs with a double. Kennedy Powell and Paislie Allen each recorded multiple hits, including Powell with her 14th double of the season and Allen with her seventh home run.

Kate Munnerlyn (3-6) took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits and three walks with three strikeouts in the final 3.0 innings. Sidne Peters tossed 2.1 innings of relief with one strikeout, while Sydney Lessentine made the start and struck out two in 1.2 innings.

Auburn opened the scoring with a two-out solo home run in the first inning.

Texas A&M answered with three runs in the bottom half behind RBI doubles from Wark and Kowalewski. Kowalewski’s two-out, two-run double gave the Aggies a 3-1 lead after one.

The Tigers responded with a solo home run to begin the second before retaking the lead, 4-3, on a walk, single and bases-clearing triple. Auburn added an RBI single later in the frame to extend its advantage to 5-3.

Auburn pushed its lead to 7-3 in the third on a two-out, two-run home run.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Auburn added a leadoff solo home run in the fifth to make it 8-3.

Texas A&M began its rally in the bottom of the fifth when Tallen Edwards reached on a fielding error before Perez launched a two-run home run to right field, trimming the deficit to 8-5.

The Aggies tied the game in the sixth, scoring three runs on five hits. Allen led off the inning with a solo home run, and Wark delivered a two-run single to knot the score at 8-8.

Auburn answered in the seventh with a three-run home run to secure the 11-8 victory.
