Aggie Men’s Golf Leads Furman Intercollegiate Heading to Final Round

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

GREENSVILLE, S.C. – The No. 18 Texas A&M men’s golf team staked claim to a lead at the Furman Intercollegiate after Saturday’s 36 holes.

The Maroon & White posted rounds of 10-under 274 and 3-under 281 to end the day at 13-under 555. The Aggies lead host Furman (-12) by one stroke and Wake Forest (-9) by four. The three teams play in the same groups for Sunday’s final round.

Phichaksn Maichon fired 13 birdies and ended the day in first place at 7-under 135. He recorded eight birdies in the first round as he posted a 6-under 65 at the par-71, 7,130-yard Furman University Golf Club.

Aaron Pounds was one of just two players in the field to shot two rounds in the 60s Saturday. He carded 3-under 68 scores in both runs to sit one stroke back of Maichon at 6-under 136.

In the field as an individual, Jacob Sosa is also in second place. After opening with an even 71, he fired six birdies in a bogeyless second round to tally a 6-under 65.

Wheaton Ennis is tied for 14th place at even 142 with rounds of 68 and 74. Also in the Aggie lineup were Jack Usner (+2) and Michael Heidelbaugh (+7). Jaime Monto, playing as an individual, stood at 5-over 147.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES

Head Coach Brian Kortan

On battling through adversity to get the lead…

“It was the opposite of smooth. It was kind of a roller coaster. We played some really good golf in stretches. There’s a group of holes out there – five, six, seven, eight – that both rounds we kind of butchered them. They got the best of us. But the guys bounced back. Jack Usner was really over par a good bit for most of both rounds but fought back and gave ups two really nice scores. Phichaksn sort of got it sideways that second round, but fought back to get 1-under par. Aaron did a heck of a job and is near the top of the leaderboard.”

On the message going into tomorrow…

“We come to these events with the opportunity to win a golf tournament. The ebb-and-flow today wasn’t what we like, but we’re in the position to do just that – win a tournament. Tomorrow we just need to take care of the ball and battle our tails off. I’m looking forward to these guys trying to chase it down tomorrow. The team’s excited about having the chance to bring home some hardware, but we also have a lot guys who will have a chance to win a golf tournament themselves.”

On the round for Jacob Sosa…

“He had a lot of good shots. Jacob knows how to score the golf ball. He’s an experienced guy who has had a good bit of success. So it was good to see him do that.”
