COLLEGE STATION, Texas—Texas A&M Head Football Coach Kevin Sumlin officially welcomed the Aggie football players back to campus on Sunday. The group includes 16 returning starters (eight on offense, eight on defense) and 46 lettermen to go along with a talented group of newcomers.
“This is an exciting time of year,” Coach Sumlin said. “Getting the recruits on campus during the summer and acclimated to academics before we start football is quite a bit different than when my parents dropped me off at Purdue.”
“These newcomers have had a chance to work with Coach (Larry) Jackson in the weight room and with the veteran players in seven-on-seven drills,” Sumlin explained. “The new NCAA rules allowing for some meeting time also helps the young people get up to speed as we install our system.”
The Aggies, ranked No. 27 in the pre-season USA Today Coaches’ poll, open the 2015 campaign at NRG Stadium against No. 16 Arizona State in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff game. Kick is set for 6 p.m. central and will be televised nationally by ESPN.
Texas A&M will open the newly redeveloped Kyle Field on Saturday, Sept. 12 against Ball State in another nationally televised contest on ESPNU with kick slated for 6 p.m. central.
Aggie football practices are not open to the public.
