Aggie Duo Named to Scholar All-America Team

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M midfielder Shea Groom and defender Meghan Streight were selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Team the NSCAA announced on Wednesday.

Groom and Streight were both named to the 13-member Scholar All-America First Team. Texas A&M, UCLA (3), Colorado College (3), La Salle (2), Saint Francis (2) and Virginia (2) were the only schools to have multiple players listed among the 37 members on the three teams. The Aggies, UCLA and Penn State were the only multiple First Team designees.

To be eligible for the Scholar All-America Team, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior and have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout her career.

In the classroom, Groom owns a 3.69 GPA in Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences. Streight boasts a 3.83 GPA in Allied Health.

Groom was named to NSCAA All-America Third Team earlier in the month. She was also selected to the NSCAA All-South Region First Team as a midfielder one year after earning the honor as a forward in 2012. This season, the Liberty, Missouri product led the Aggies with 35 points on 14 goals and seven assists. She earned All-SEC First Team status and was named to the All-Tournament Team as A&M won its first-ever SEC Tournament title in November. In the Aggies’ 3-1 win over UMass in September, Groom logged A&M’s first hat trick since the 2011 season.

For her career, Groom has 68 points on 25 goals and 18 assists. Her freshman season was shortened by injury, limiting her to 10 games, but she posted 16 points on six goals and four assists in her abbreviated campaign. Last year she played in all 25 games, logging 17 points on five goals and seven assists.

Streight was an NSCAA All-South Region First Team selection this season. She earned NSCAA/Continental Tire All-America Third Team recognition as a midfielder last season along with NSCAA All-South Region First Team status in 2012 and was named to the NSCAA All-Central Region squad in 2011. The McKinney, Texas product tallied six points on the season, including two goals. She helped the squad post eight shutouts and register a 0.98 goals-against average. This season, she repeated as a member of both the All-SEC First Team and the SEC All-Tournament Team.

Streight has started all 74 contests during her career in College Station. She has 27 points in her career with nine goals and nine assists.

The Aggies posted a historic season in 2013, finishing with an 18-5-2 overall record and winning a share of the SEC regular-season for the first time along while capturing their first SEC Tournament crown. A&M earned a berth to their 19th consecutive NCAA Championship, appearing in the second round for the 16th consecutive season and advancing to the Sweet 16 for the 12th time in program history.
