Aggie Baseball Falls to Vanderbilt, 6-1

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 2 Texas A&M Aggies fell to the No. 5 Vanderbilt Commodores, 6-1, Friday evening on Blue Bell Park at Olsen Field.

Vanderbilt (36-11, 14-9) got on the board first with a two-run third inning off Aggie starter Brigham Hill (5-1). After a couple hit-by-pitches, Vanderbilt’s Jeren Kendall bunted for a base hit and Tyler Campbell scored on an overthrow to first. With no outs and runners on the corners, Hill induced a double play by Will Toffey, but Connor Kaiser came around to score on the play, staking the Commodores to a 2-0 lead.

The Commodores added to their lead in the fourth. They started things off with a leadoff walk by Julian Infante. A double to left-center by Alonzo Jones put two runners in scoring position. Vanderbilt scored a pair of runs when Austin Homan misplayed a grounder by Jason Delay, inflating the Commodores’ cushion to 4-0.

Hill loaded the bases in the fifth before he was relieved by Stephen Kolek. Jones hit a fly ball to rightfield to score a run before Kolek ended the frame with a groundout by Delay.

Vanderbilt pushed one more across in the eighth with an RBI single by Kaiser.

The Maroon and White (36-10, 14-9) staved off the shutout with a run in the ninth off reliever Ben Bowden. Ryne Birk hit a leadoff single and came around to score on a single by Michael Barash. Jonathan Moroney followed with a pinch-hit single to rightfield, but Ronnie Gideon struck out swinging and Homan grounded into a double play to end the game.

Boomer White had a two-hit performance that extended his hitting streak in SEC games to a 23 games.

As a team, the Aggies hit just 3-for-18 with runners on base.

Hill (5-1) fanned seven in his 4.1 innings of work and was saddled with his first loss of the season. Of the five runs he allowed, three were earned. He was doomed by free passes. Vanderbilt’s first three runs reach via hit batsmen or walks. The fifth run to come home was pushed to third base with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Aggie bullpen combo of Kolek, Ty Schlottmann, Hendrix, and Corbin Martin allowed one Vanderbilt run in 4.2 innings of work. Kolek worked 3.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four.

Commodore starter Kyle Wright (6-3 ) kept the Aggies off the scoreboard with 7.0 innings of scoreless ball to earn the win.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a 2:32 first pitch on Saturday. Kyle Simonds will get the ball for the Aggies looking for the series win.
