Ag softball shuts out TSU 6-0

The No. 21Texas A&M softball team earned its fourth shutout of the season and improved its winning streak to eight with a 6-0 defeat of Texas State Tuesday at the Aggie Softball Complex.

The Aggies took an early 2-0 lead on the Bobcats. The first two runs of the game came in the bottom of the first when senior Rhiannon Kliesing slammed her sixth home run of the season over the right field fence, pushing junior Natalie Villarreal home with her.

In the bottom of the second sophomore Mel Dumezich popped a single into the left side and took two bases when Villarreal added a single down the right field line with two outs. Both were left stranded in the inning.

A&M sent three base runners home in the next inning. Kliesing drew a walk to start the half-inning. Sophomore Lauren Schwirtlich, pinch running for Kliesing, was sent home in the next at-bat by classmate Meagan May’s long double to right center.

Freshman Kaydee Rayburn entered at second to run for May and reached the plate on another double, hit by freshman Amber Garza. Garza stole home on a passed ball and brought the score to 5-0.

Dumezich bunted and outran the throw for a single. She got as far as second base but was left on base at the end of the third.

Freshman Cassie Tysarczyk hit her third long ball of the season in the bottom of the fifth to put A&M ahead by another run. The home run popped up to left-center and bounced off the top of the wall.

The Aggies outhit the Bobcats 9-1. Kliesing led the A&M offense with two RBI on a home run and three walks. The Pearland, Texas, native was 1-1 on the night.

Dumezich improves to 5-2 with the win. She struck out 10 batters in seven complete innings and allowed only one hit, a bunt single. Texas State’s Chandler Hall (2-4) suffered the loss.
