Accused Shooter of West Texas Deputy Dies

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) _ A West Texas man accused of fatally shooting a deputy has died in a hospital nearly a week after he shot himself and surrendered to end the standoff.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reports that Marcus Wade Madison was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon at a San Angelo hospital.

Tom Green County Justice of the Peace Eddie Howard told the San Angelo Standard-Times that the preliminary cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.

Reagan County Deputy Josh Mitchell was killed Aug. 1 after he went to the 42-year-old Madison’s house in Big Lake to talk to him about a complaint. That led to a 17-hour standoff that ended when Madison walked out Thursday morning with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face.
