BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Texas A&M sophomore Myles Garrett earned Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week honors on Monday after one of the most complete games of his career in the Aggies’ 30-17 over then-No. 21 Mississippi State at Kyle Field last Saturday.
Garrett, from Arlington, Texas, filled the stat sheet with seven tackles, a sack for a loss of seven yards, two total tackles for loss of yardage (-8 yards), a forced fumble and a batted down pass as the Aggies moved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in SEC play. It was the Aggies’ second win of 2015 over an Associated Press Top 25 team, and the ninth AP Top 25 victory of the Kevin Sumlin era (since 2012).
Garrett’s forced fumble was crucial in the victory as it thwarted a red zone scoring opportunity by the Bulldogs midway through the third quarter. On first-and-10 at the TAMU 10, Garrett stripped MSU running back Aeris Williams after a one-yard gain and fellow defensive end Qualen Cunningham fell on the ball to end the drive.
Garrett is the SEC leader in QB sacks with 7.5 and is tied for the SEC lead in tackles for loss (9.5) and forced fumbles (3). He ranks in the top five nationally in all three statistical categories.
