College Station Council Wants More Say in RVP Activity

The College Station city council wants more say in the activity of the Research Valley Partnership (RVP) economic development agency.

The council at its last meeting approved James Benham’s motion rejecting RVP requests, which included adding three members, one of its choosing.

Benham wants among other things the city getting a seat on the RVP’s executive board.

80 percent of the RVP’s funding comes from College Station, Bryan, and Brazos County.

The RVP recently amended its bylaws to add additional voting members to its board of directors. It also made a change to allow the extension of a member’s board service if that member is an elected official.

The council’s 6-1 vote rejected the bylaw amendments regarding the appointment and qualifications of directors.

The council’s motion, according to the city’s blog, requested the RVP for a comprehensive bylaw amendment that addresses: 1) methods of notification to the city and further definition of approval of council with a 45-day window to respond; 2) voting representation on the executive committee for the City of College Station; and 3) an explanation of why the RVP needs a third self-appointed board member.

Julie Schultz voted against Benham’s motion.
