Aggie Grad Simone Facey Advances to 200m Final at Pan Am Games

TORONTO – Texas A&M graduate Simone Facey advanced to the Pan American Games final of the 200 meters after two rounds of action Thursday at York University while current Aggie Lindon Victor placed seventh in the decathlon.

Facey, a member of the Texas A&M Hall of Fame, won her prelim race in 22.95 seconds (1.9 wind) and then placed second in her semifinal heat with a windy 22.64 (2.6). She will race in the final on Friday at 4:40 p.m. (CT).

In the 200m prelim race Facey finished ahead of Anthonique Strachman of the Bahamas (23.10) and Canada’s Kimberly Hyacinthe (23.30). In another heat A&M alum Kanika Beckles of Grenada ran 23.48 to place seventh and advanced to the semifinal round on time.

A tight finish in the semifinal had Facey posting her windy 22.64 to finish behind a 22.59 from Ecuador’s Angela Tenorio and ahead of Florida’s Kyra Jefferson, who ran 22.64. Also advancing to the final from this semifinal heat were Hyacinthe (22.81) and Reyare Thomas of Trinidad & Tobago (22.88). Beckles finished eighth in the other semifinal.

Victor, representing Grenada, scored 7,453 points in the decathlon as he bettered his previous best score of 7,429 set in placing ninth at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, last year.

The second day of action for Victor included the top performances among the field in both the discus and javelin. Victor threw the discus 163-4 (49.80) for 866 points and then produced a 219-8 (66.97) in the javelin for 843 points. In the 110 hurdles Victor’s 15.85 picked up 750 points while a 13-1 ½ (4.00) clearance in the pole vault netted 617 points. Wrapping up the decathlon in the 1,500 meters, he clocked 5:14.03 for 482 points.

Victor’s brother, Kurt Felix, earned a silver medal in the decathlon with a total of 8,269 points. The winner of the event was Canada’s Damian Warner as his tally of 8,659 points broke the Pan Am Games record of 8,373 set by Cuba’s Leonel Suarez, who no heighted in the pole vault during this year’s competition.

Latario Collie (Bahamas) competes in the triple jump final, amid a field of 15 jumpers, on Friday with a start time of 10:35 a.m. (CT). Aggies in action on Friday may include Janeil Bellille (4×400 – Trinidad & Tobago), Facey (4×100 – Jamaica), Shavez Hart (4×100 – Bahamas), Shamier Little (4×400 – United States) in the relay prelims.
