Senator Schwertner Calls Emergency HHS Committee Hearing Over Planned Parenthood Video

The state legislature is joining investigations by the governor and attorney general after a video is released of a senior Planned Parenthood official discussing the use of fetal tissue following abortions.

Brazos County state senator Charles Schwertner of Georgetown, who chairs the health and human services committee, has called for an emergency meeting to determine if Planned Parenthood has done anything illegal.

Schwertner says the committee will also review state laws and regulations from the department of state health services.

Dr. Schwertner, who is an orthopedic surgeon, says the video is “almost ghastly and evil” how Planned Parenthood’s senior director of medical research describes the process of harvesting fetal remains for sale.

Schwertner says Texas law forbids selling aborted fetal remains for profit without the permission of the person who had the abortion.

News release from State Senator Charles Schwertner:

Today, Senator Charles Schwertner, MD (R-Georgetown) made the following statement regarding the recent video showing Dr. Deborah Nucatola, Planned Parenthood’s Senior Director of Medical Research, admitting to the organization’s routine sale of organs and other aborted fetal tissue:

“The recent video showing a senior Planned Parenthood executive casually discussing the sale of organs and dismembered body parts of aborted human babies is unquestionably one of the most evil and deplorable things I’ve ever seen. I know many Texans are equally horrified by such a callous disregard for innocent human life.

“After speaking with Lt. Governor Patrick, I plan to call the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services into an emergency meeting later this month to ascertain whether this appalling practice is currently taking place in Texas, and if so, what steps can be taken to put a swift and decisive stop to it.”

A medical doctor by training, Dr. Schwertner currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services. Schwertner is currently serving his second term as the senator for Senate District 5, a ten-county region of central and east Texas.
