Three weeks from Saturday, the Brazos Valley Farmers Market will be in a new location.
Bryan city councilman Al Saenz forwarded the announcement from the Downtown Bryan Association announced at this week’s council meeting the move to 21st Street between Main and Bryan.
The relocation of the Farmers Market on June 6 is the first step towards new development at the north end of downtown Bryan.
Deputy City Manager Joey Dunn says Texas A&M architecture students are in the early stages of designing a covered pavilion with park amenities and identifying possible grant funding sources. Dunn also says the city will be receiving proposals from private developers shortly.
News release from the Downtown Bryan Association:
The Brazos Valley Farmer’s Market is returning to its roots by moving its weekly vendor market to Historic Downtown Bryan. Saturday, June 6 will be the first market in the new location on 21st St. between Main and Bryan streets on the north end of downtown.
“We are excited to have the Farmer’s Market come back home to Downtown Bryan,” said Downtown Bryan Association Executive Director Sandy Farris. The DBA facilitated the move for the year-round local growers group, which has been located at the Brazos County Health Department parking lot since 1997.
“The Farmer’s Market will be a great addition to Downtown Bryan. We are looking forward to supporting the farmers as they continue to bring locally-grown produce to their existing customers, as well as the new ones we know they will attract in this new location,” Farris said.
The Farmer’s Market goals are to create venues where local farmers can connect directly with Brazos Valley consumers, to build community in an urban setting, and to provide public education on regional farming, gardening and food preparation. Each week, farmers offer locally-grown produce, eggs, grass-fed beef, pastured poultry, jams, jellies and homemade craft items.
“We look forward to much success with this move and are happy to be working with The Downtown Bryan Association. We have great expectations for the downtown area,” said Farmer’s Market President Harvey Wise.
Downtown Market History
It has been more than 80 years since a regular farmers market was part of the footprint of Downtown Bryan. A covered farmers market was erected in 1931 on the east side of the railroad tracks at the present-day William Joel Bryan Parkway and Tabor Rd. In the attached photo, more than a dozen Model T’s and other early automobiles are parked around the market, and men in short sleeves and wide-brim hats appear to be perusing the offerings at the market. Visible in the background is a bustling downtown Bryan skyline showing a number of buildings that are still standing 84 years later. The market ceased operating at the site in 1960, when the property was sold to a local businessman who converted it to a parking lot.
