It’s Election Day in Grimes, Burleson, and Washington Counties

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ As lawmakers open Texas’ legislative session, voters in state House District 13 are choosing a new representative.

Republican Rep. Lois Kolkhorst of Brenham was a 14-year House veteran and chaired the powerful Public Health committee. But she’s moving to the state Senate after winning a special election last month.

Kolkhorst replaces fellow Republican Glenn Hegar of Katy, who gave up his Senate seat after winning election to state comptroller in November.

Vying to replace Kolkhorst in Tuesday’s special election are three Republican candidates, a county judge, geologist and attorney, as well as a Democratic retiree.

None are well-known outside the district, which comprises parts of seven counties west of Houston.

The Legislature convenes Tuesday for a regular session lasting 140 days.
