EL PASO, Texas (AP) _ Four months after security was revamped at Fort Bliss, the Texas Army post is again ramping up efforts after a shooting at a veterans clinic.
Fort Bliss spokesman Lt. Col. Lee Peters said the post increased random vehicle searches and checks of proper registration Wednesday, one day after the attack in which a former clerk killed a psychologist before committing suicide.
Officials did not provide a motive for the shooting or say how the gunman, an Army veteran, got a .380-caliber handgun past security checkpoints. They also would not go into specifics about how long the increased checks would remain in place.
Even with the changes, several gates at Fort Bliss are open to civilians, who need just a driver’s license or other government identification to access the post.
