COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M seniors Shea Groom and Meghan Streight were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America Team as announced by the NSCAA on Friday.
Groom was named to the NSCAA All-America First Team while Streight was selected for the Second Team.
It is the second All-America honor for both players as Groom earned Third Team distinction in 2013 and Streight was named to the Third Team in 2012.
Groom, the SEC Offensive Player of the Year and a Capital One Academic All-America First Team student-athlete, finished the season with 39 points on 16 goals and seven assists.
For her career, Groom appeared in 85 matches, including 80 starts. Her 41 goals and 107 points both rank sixth on Texas A&M’s career charts.
Groom has been honored repeatedly for her prowess on the field and in the classroom during her four years at Texas A&M. Last season, she was named to the National Soccer Coaches of Association of America (NSCAA) All-America Third Team as well as the NSCAA Scholar All-America First Team. The Liberty, Missouri native is a two-time All-SEC selection and has twice been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Streight started all 101 matches during her career, including 27 on the backline this season. This year, she led a defense that posted a 0.89 goals-against average and nine shutouts.
Streight earned all-conference recognition all four years, including All-SEC First Team status each of the last three years. Last season, Streight impressed in the classroom, garnering NSCAA Academic All-Scholar First Team, in addition to her All-SEC First Team accolade. Streight was A&M’s most decorated player during her sophomore season, earning All-SEC First Team as a midfielder and pulling SEC All-Tournament Team, NSCAA All-South Region First Team and NSCAA All-America Third Team honors. As a freshman, she was named All-Big 12 Second Team, Big 12 All-Newcomer, Big 12 All-Tournament Team and NSCAA All-Central Region Third Team.
Groom became the fifth A&M player to earn First Team recognition, joining Adele Fairman, Carol Smith and Bettina Bernardi who all earned the honors in the 1980s, before A&M’s squad was sponsored by the Athletics Department, and Bryn Blalack who was named to the top team in 1996.
Groom and Streight joined three other Aggies who earned All-America honors on multiple occasions. Bernardi was recognized in 1982 and 1983 as a member of the A&M club team before transferring to North Carolina. Blalack was a first-teamer in 1996 and a second-teamer in 1997. Ashlee Pistorius was named to the Second Team in 2006 and the Third Team in 2007.
It marks the second time the Aggies have had two players earn NSCAA All-America honors in the same year. In 1996, Blalack was named to the First Team and Diana Rowe was honored on the Third Team.
Texas A&M experienced a historic campaign in 2014, setting a school record for wins on the way to its first-ever College Cup appearance. The Maroon and White went 22-3-2 on the season and won the SEC Double with a regular-season crown and tournament title. The Aggies became the first team to earn the SEC Double in back-to-back seasons since Florida in 2001. They also became the first SEC team since Florida in 2001 to advance to the College Cup.
