HOUSTON (AP) _ A Harris County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man who authorities say led him on a short chase after the deputy tried to stop him for speeding.
Sheriff’s spokesman John Legg says the deputy shot the man after he jumped out of the car. Legg says the deputy was concerned for his safety and fired four times. He didn’t know how many times the man was shot, the Houston Chronicle reported in its online edition.
Legg said the driver had refused to pull over and led the deputy on a short chase through a residential neighborhood before running a red light and crashing into two vehicles. His car spun out of control and came to rest on the side of the road.
Two passengers obeyed the deputy’s commands to put their hand in the air, but the driver jumped out of the car and ran, Legg said.
The deputy shot the man when he apparently turned toward him while attempting to flee, Legg said.
No weapon was recovered. The shooting is under investigation.
