Women’s Golf Wins Jim West Challenge at Tapatio Springs

BOERNE, Texas- Texas A&M’s women’s golf team won the Jim West Challenge at Tapatio Springs, after playing the tournament’s final two rounds on Monday. Texas A&M freshman Maddie Szeryk finished the tournament in second place, shooting an even-par 216 over three rounds.

“It is awesome to end the fall season with a win,” said Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. “The girls have worked very hard to earn this. It was a complete team effort this week.”

The Aggies played two rounds on Monday to complete the event in front of impending weather on Tuesday. Texas A&M shot a 292 (+4) on the par 72, 6,234 yard course to remain in first place after two rounds. The Aggies finished the day with a 297 (+9) on the second round of the day to finish the tournament with an 886 (+22), six shots ahead of second-placed Houston. This is the Aggies’ first event win since Mar. 9, 2014, when Texas A&M won the Battle at the Valley.

Szeryk led the Aggies with a 3-under 69 and a 3-over 75 on Monday, finishing the tournament in second place. Szeryk has finished in the top five of all four tournaments she has played in her college career. Szeryk finished two strokes behind individual champion Wad Phaewchimplee of Kent State, who shot 214 (-2).

Marijosse Navarro and Bianca Fabrizio both tied for fifth place, shooting 222 (+6) for the tournament. Navarro shot 75 (+3) and 71 (-1) on Monday, while Fabrizio shot 76 (+4) and 73 (+1) to finish in a tie for fifth. Navarro has finished in the top five of two straight tournaments—and has finished in the top 10 of all three she has played this year. Fabrizio’s fifth placed finish is the best finish of her career.

Callie Scheffler, playing as an individual, finished in a tie for 28th with a total score of 232 (+16). Thanya Pattamakljsakul shot an even-par 72 in the tournament’s second round, and finished the event with a 233 (+17), tied for 33rd place. Andrea Jonama was only one stroke behind that, with a total of 234 (+18), and tied for 40thplace.

The Aggies now break until the spring semester, when they return to action on Feb. 13-15 at the Seminole Match-Up in Tallahassee, Fla.
