Austin Apartment Fire Injures a Dozen

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Twelve people were hurt Monday after a fire at an apartment complex in the northeast part of Austin forced some of them to jump from second-floor windows and balconies.

Eight adults and four children were taken to hospitals after the fire at the 124-unit Westheimer Regency Apartments.

The injured included a 2-month-old child with non-life-threatening burns and a 6-month-old child with heat exhaustion. Also, a pregnant woman and a child were injured after jumping from a window. And a firefighter suffered an elbow injury.

Austin television station KVUE reports one woman dropped her three grandchildren into the arms of a man waiting below.

Three people refused treatment at the scene.
