AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Democrat Bill White has found at least one multimillion dollar program Texas can do without: commercials and advertisements that promote Texas.
Asked recently if there were any state programs that should be eliminated to save money, he named the governor’s advertising budget.
But Republican Gov. Rick Perry, who White is running against, says there is no governor’s advertising budget.
Pressed by The Associated Press to provide details, White’s campaign produced a document showing more than $22 million in expenditures for advertising services for Texas tourism and marketing.
The fund is part of a state law that requires one-half of one percent of the state’s hotel and motel tax revenue be used for advertising and marketing to promote Texas tourism.
