The Brazos Valley Food Bank received another major contribution towards its four million dollar expansion campaign. Thursday’s 150 thousand dollar donation from Walmart puts the food bank at 40 percent of their goal. Food bank Executive Director Theresa Mangapora said the milestone will allow them to approach two foundations which, combined, could help them reach 80 percent of their goal. The campaign will expand BVFB warehouse space and allow them to provide healthier options to residents with fresh meat and produce. Mangapora said a study by Feeding America released last week reported one in five Brazos County households faces food insecurity. If the household includes children, that number rises to one in four. Walmart market manager Greg Smith said he hopes to improve those numbers with the help of the latest store. Mangapora said the food bank is on pace to distribute 5.5 million pounds of food this year, up more than 25 percent over last year.
