Brazos County sheriff’s officers regularly monitor phone calls involving jail inmates.
That led to arresting a detention officer and an inmate on charges of smuggling narcotics and tobacco products.
Sheriff Chris Kirk says there is evidence that the jailer, 20 year old Cody Jones of College Station, delivered packages containing contraband twice.
Jones and the inmate, 40 year old Roy Arevalo Sr. of Bryan, were arrested for engaging in organized criminal activity.
The sheriff anticipates more arrests will be made.
Jones, who was hired in December 2012, is on paid administrative leave.

Friday, April 4th, 2014 at 5:35PM , Cody Allen Jones a Brazos County Detention Officer, was arrested by Sheriff’s Investigators and charged with Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity, a 2nd Degree Felony. Also charged and arrested was Roy Edward Arevalo Sr., who has been in the custody at the Brazos County Jail since he was arrested on March 14th, 2014 for 4 counts of Judgment NISI / Motion to Revoke and Motion to Proceed for Manufacture – Delivery of a Control Substance and Possession of Marihuana .
In the course of a criminal investigation, a Sheriff’s Investigator listened to calls placed from the one of the cells at the Brazos County Detention Center (NOTE: all calls from the Detention Center are recorded for security purposes). On Tuesday, March 20th, 2014 a call by Roy Edward Arevalo was made to a male person he referred to as “RJ” and “son”, believed to be Roy Arevalo Jr. In this call Roy Arevalo is heard using personalized code words to direct his son to buy tobacco products and what the Investigator believes to be narcotics and to package them. Then he directed him to contact and deliver the package to “the mechanic” and pay him “$5” to deliver the package to the “shop”. Arevalo also directed his son to make the delivery close to the “shop” that opened at 7 o’clock. Investigators believed that the “shop” is the Brazos County Detention Center, the “mechanic” to be a detention officer and “$5” to be $500. On March 23rd Arevalo made a similar call with instructions to “RJ” to have the “mechanic” to make another delivery.
On Tuesday, April 1st Sheriff’s Investigators reviewed phone records of Roy Arevalo Jr. “RJ”, the records included incoming and outgoing calls to a cell phone number known to belong to Cody A. Jones a Detention Officer. Staffing records for the Detention Center indicate that Cody Jones was on duty on the two dates that the deliveries were made.
At 6:30PM on Thursday, April 3rd Sheriff’s Investigators met Detention Officer Cody Jones as he reported to duty at the Detention Center. Once confronted by Investigators, Jones admitted to the details of being approached by Roy Arevalo to bring tobacco in to the jail, receiving and making calls to Roy Arevalo Jr., and picking up money and packages that he delivered in to the secure Jail. Proving he had conspired with Roy Averalo Sr. and Roy Arevalo Jr. to introduce contraband in to the Brazos County Detention Center.
Warrants were issued for both Roy Arevelo Sr. and Cody A. Jones. Jones turned himself in to Investigators for arrest and was booked into the Brazos County Jail and Arevalo was served with the additional charges in his jail cell. Bond was set by the Judge at $20,000 for Cody Jones and $250,000 for Roy Arevalo. The criminal investigation continues and additional arrest are anticipated.
20 year old Cody Jones has been a Detention Officer for the Brazos County Jail since December, 2012. Jones’ current assignment is Security Officer at the Brazos County Detention Center. Detention Officer Burns has been placed on immediate suspension with pay pending the completion of the internal investigation
