ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) _ The Texas Rangers started their final push for a
playoff spot with a 12-0 victory over the Houston Astros last night. The Rangers
pulled within a game of idle Cleveland for the second AL wild-card berth with
six games remaining. Houston starter Jordan Lyles gave up seven hits and seven
runs with three walks in three innings.
Alex Rios of the Texas Rangers hit for the cycle
against Houston in his first four at-bats. Rios completed the cycle with a
triple to right-center field in the sixth inning last night. He made it to third
base standing up without a throw. It’s the third cycle in the majors this
season.
UNDATED (AP) _ The St. Louis Cardinals still own a two-game lead in the
National League Central after helping Pittsburgh and Cincinnati clinch playoff
berths. Carlos Beltran hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer and Adam Wainwright
picked up his 18th win as the Cards beat Washington 4-3 to eliminate the
Nationals from the postseason race. The Pirates used Starling Marte’s two-out
homer in the ninth to top the Chicago Cubs 2-1, and the Reds beat the New York
Mets 3-2 on Shin-Soo Choo’s walkoff single in the bottom of the 10th.
