Bryan Council Rejects Nightclub Rezoning Request

A country music nightclub that closed at the mall three weeks ago is not relocating to Bryan.

Earlier this month, the owner of Rockies received the unanimous recommendation of Bryan’s planning and zoning commission to build a new facility on Highway 30 east of Harvey Road.

Tuesday night, the city council held a public hearing. There were two speakers. Both land agent Mark Mcauliffe and volunteer fireman Jerry Merker were opposed.

Art Hughes motion to approve the request died for the lack of a second.

No one on the council spoke for or against the rezoning.  Mayor Jason Bienski, speaking Wednesday on WTAW’s The Infomaniacs, says there was no discussion because the motion was not seconded.

Bienski says he and other council members were contacted by opponents following the P&Z endorsement.

Bienski also says the owner of Rockies is exploring other locations that have proper zoning.
