COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M will be well-represented at the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship next week as five Aggies will be among the field when the country’s top amateur golfers tee off at the Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
Current Aggie golfers Ty Dunlap, Andrew Lister, Jade Scott and Greg Yates will join former A&M golfer Matt Van Zandt, who was a member of A&M’s 2009 National Championship squad, in competition.
“The U.S. Amateur is a huge event.” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “I think it speaks well of our program that we have that many players capable of qualifying for a national championship. I’m really excited for all of them.”
Located just outside of Boston, the Brookline, Mass., Country Club is a par-70, 7,310-yard championship course that holds a 73.8 rating.
Following two days of practice rounds, competition gets underway on Monday, Aug. 12, with the first round of stroke play. Following a second round of stroke play on Tuesday, the field will be trimmed to 64 players who will compete in match play until a champion is crowned on Sunday, Aug. 18.
“I think this summer our guys, as a group, have played as good a summer schedule as you can and have really had a lot of success,” Higgins added. “I feel good about that and think that they are going to come back ready. Playing a high level of competition is only going to make you better and hopefully that will translate into good results for us this season.”
Last year a trio of Aggies – Drew Evans, Jordan Russell and Greg Yates – competed in the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship which was held Aug. 13-19 in Cherry Hills Village, Colo. Evans (71-72=143, +2) advanced to match play where he fell in the round of 64, while Yates (77-67=144, +3) was just a stroke back and missed out on the cut after stroke play despite carding an impressive second-round 67. Russell (79-69=148) finished at seven-over par for the tournament.
