DRESDEN, Texas (AP) _ At least $500,000 has turned up missing from a group that supports a Central Texas cemetery founded more than 135 years ago.
The Corsicana Daily Sun reports the Dresden Cemetery Association at one time had $700,000 _ thanks to the bequest of wealthy donors. About 4,000 bodies are buried in the cemetery near Dresden, a town of about 25 people.
Navarro County Sheriff Elmer Tanner said Wednesday that a criminal complaint was filed and a potential suspect has been identified but so far no arrests.
The loss was discovered in June by the new president of the volunteer association, Joe McClure, who reviewed the group’s financial records.
A Texas Historical Commission website says association members have met annually since the cemetery was founded in 1877.
