An evening drive Monday night landed an eleven-year-old boy in the Juvenile Detention Center for unauthorized use of motor vehicle and citations for traffic violations.
Bryan Police Sergeant Jason James says the boy, who was staying with his grandparents, got the key to their SUV without their knowledge and drove through the neighborhood for more than six blocks.
Damages included striking a tree in a yard on Woodmere and knocking over a mailbox on Oak Ridge before being stopped by hitting a tree in a yard near the intersection of Oak Ridge and Briar Oak.
Damage to the home included the tree, the breaking of a wire holding up another tree, damage to the grass, and a lot of rubber on the driveway.
James said the boy kept his foot on the gas, which caused a lot of smoke and made callers fear that the car was on fire, but no one was injured.
He says the first two neighbors aren’t pressing charges for the tree and mailbox, but the grandparents are filing charges for the stolen SUV.
He says the boy will meet with the judge Tuesday morning.
