Fatal Crashes in College Station

The intersection of William D. Fitch Parkway and Barron Road in College Station was closed for more than six hours Thursday following a two vehicle crash. Killed was the driver of a pickup hauling pesticides, 24 year old Daniel Dodds of Bryan. The driver and passenger of a SUV were treated for non-life threatening injuries and released from College Station Medical Center. Witnesses told police Dodds was going east on Barron when it ran a red light and struck the northbound SUV. The truck then struck a utility pole and caught fire. Bart Humphreys of the College Station Fire Department says passerbys attempted to pull Dodds out of his pickup but were unable due to the heat. Others assisted in removing the driver and passenger of the SUV. Humphreys says the intersection was closed all afternoon because city crews removed three inches of soil contaminated with pesticides in an area approximately 35 feet long and 10 feet wide.

Wednesday night shortly before midnight, a SUV rolled and crashed along the southbound freeway service road south of Fitch. The driver, 17 year old Blake Allen, told police he swerved to avoid hitting a rabbit. The SUV went off the road, the driver overcorrected, and the vehicle landed in the median along the freeway. Allen was treated for non-life threatening injuries at the Med. Killed was a passenger, 16 year old Sydney Jeter. A prayer vigil for the College Station teenagers will be held tonight/Thursday at 8 at Tigerland Stadium. And Friday morning between 6:30 and 9:30, portions of the freeway and the frontage road will be closed as the police department’s traffic unit will be collecting evidence.

Original story:

A crash Thursday morning at William D. Fitch Parkway and Barron Road in College Station has killed one and hospitalized a second person.

As of 11 a.m. motorists have been asked to avoid the area.

This follows another fatality crash shortly before midnight Thursday on a Highway 6 frontage road south of the William D. Fitch exit.

College Station Police have not released the identity of the 16 year old female passenger who died or the 17 year old male driver who was treated for non-life threatening injuries at College Station Medical Center.

Officers believe the SUV went off the frontage road to the west, crossed the pavement to the east, then rolled at least one time. The driver told investigators he was trying to avoid hitting a rabbit.
