Men’s quarterfinals
LONDON (AP) _ Men’s quarterfinal play takes center stage at Wimbledon today.
Conspicuously absent from the festivities are Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer,
who unexpectedly cashed in their chips during the string of week one upsets.
That’s good news for top-seed Novak Djokovic, who could be in for a tough test
against No. 7 Tomas Berdych.
Local hopes continue to rest on Andy Murray, who’s trying to become the first
British male to win a Wimbledon singles title since Fred Perry in 1936. Murray
is set to take on 54th-ranked Fernando Verdasco.
Right now, No. 4 David Ferrer is facing No. 8 Juan Martin del Potro, and it’ll
be No. 24 Jerzy Janowicz vs. 130th-ranked Lukasz Kubot.

Lisicki on a roll
LONDON (AP) _ Less than 24 hours after knocking top-seed and defending champ
Serena Williams out of Wimbledon, Sabine Lisicki (lih-SIH’-kee) made quick work
of Kaia Kanepi (KY’-uh kuh-NEP’-ee) 6-3, 6-3 in 61 minutes.
The 23rd-seeded Lisicki advanced to her second Wimbledon semifinal, where
she’ll play No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska (ahg-nee-ESH’-kuh rahd-VAHN’-skuh) who
defeated sixth-seed Li Na (lee nah) 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.
U.S. singles hopes are over after Sloane Stephens was eliminated by France’s
Marion Bartoli 6-4, 7-5. The victory puts Bartoli into the Wimbledon semifinals
for the second time where she’ll face Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens.
Flipkens is into the final eight at a Grand Slam event for the first time after
upsetting former champ and eighth-seed Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIHT’-oh-vuh) 4-6,
6-3, 6-4.
