Thursday night’s College Station City Council meeting includes a presentation and possible action about building a new natatorium.
Voters in the College Station school district (CSISD) could have an aquatic facility as part of a bond election this November. Depending on the size, the estimated cost ranges from $25 to $32 million dollars.
Last month, the CSISD school board was given a project list, including a nataorium. While the board has not decided on what will be asked of voters, there was discussion about asking the city to participate in some way with the natatorium.
One of two possible scenarios has the school district giving property and the city builds and operates it, or the city gives the property and the school district builds and operates. The latter has been suggested by city staff.
Background information given to the council by staff also looked at the arrangements in Bryan, Conroe, Corpus Christi, McAllen, Pearland, and Texas City.
In fiscal year 2012, the city’s budget for the current CSISD natatorium was $76,876. The city used it 74% and CSISD 26%.
