Explosives Found in Cop Killer’s Home

BAYTOWN, Texas (AP) _ A Southeast Texas sheriff said Tuesday that at least 100 explosive devices were recovered from the home of the suspect in the killing of one of his deputies.

Chambers County Sheriff Joe LaRive said homemade pipe bombs, gas grenades and altered tear gas devices with booby traps were taken from the Baytown-area mobile home of Gilbert Ortez Jr. He says any one of the “incendiary devices” could have leveled the trailer.

Ortez was suspected of fatally shooting Deputy Shane Detwiler. The Iraq War veteran and Bronze Star recipient died of two gunshot wounds to the head Tuesday morning. That began a 91/2-hour standoff that ended when police and deputies entered the mobile home and found Ortez dead.

Autopsies revealed that Ortez died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head.

LaRive said an assault rifle was found next to the body. However, Ortez’s family is asking for an independent investigation into the incident, saying Chambers County deputies entered the home unlawfully.
