Two State Senators Interested in Comptroller’s Job

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ The chairman of the Texas Senate Finance Committee says he is considering running for state comptroller.

Republican Sen. Tommy Williams of The Woodlands issued a statement Wednesday saying he would explore a statewide candidacy after Comptroller Susan Combs announced she would not seek re-election in 2014.

Williams was the chief budget writer in the Senate during this year’s legislative session. He said that while he was concentrating on the special session that began on Monday, he would make a decision about running for comptroller soon afterward.

State Sen. Glenn Hegar, Rep. Harvey Hilderbran and tea party activist Debra Medina have also expressed interest in the Republican nomination for comptroller. The Republican primary is 10 months away and the filing deadline is Dec. 9.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Republican state Sen. Glenn Hegar of Katy says he plans to run for Texas comptroller now that Susan Combs has announced she will not seek re-election.

Hegar said in an interview Wednesday that he has the business background to serve as the state’s chief financial officer.

He was one of several politicians to thank Combs for her 20 years of service and express an interest in running to replace her in 2014. Kerrville Rep. Harvey Hilderbran and tea party activist Debra Medina also expressed interest on Wednesday.

Combs said she announced she would not run again to give other candidates a chance to begin campaigning. The Republican primary is in 10 months, and the deadline for candidates to file their paperwork is Dec. 9.
