Texas A&M’s Sanchez-Quintanar Named Texas Region Senior of the Year

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M women’s tennis standout Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar has been named Texas Region Senior of the Year, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association has announced.

Currently No. 4 in the national ITA singles rankings, Sanchez-Quintanar has been ranked as high as No. 3 in the country, the highest ranking in school history. She has been listed in the top six in the nation in singles throughout the entire 2012-13 season.

Sanchez-Quintanar recently became Texas A&M’s first two-time All-American in women’s tennis after receiving a No. 4 seed in the 2013 NCAA Singles Championship, which begins May 22 in Urbana, Ill.

The Campo de Criptana, Spain, native enters the NCAA team championship 36-7 overall in singles, including 22-5 against nationally ranked opponents. Her 36 wins ranks fourth in the A&M records for most wins in a season. Sanchez-Quintanar is 16-4 in dual matches, all played at the No. 1 line. She garnered All-SEC first-team laurels after going 9-3 in conference matches and helping the Aggies capture the SEC regular season championship.

The ITA Texas Region singles champion in the fall, Sanchez-Quintanar’s 36 singles victories ranks third in the A&M records for most singles wins in a season. Last year, she went 40-6 (.870), ranking second in the A&M records for most wins and shattering the school record for highest winning percentage in a single season. As she nears the end of her collegiate career, Sanchez-Quintanar enters the NCAA championships boasting a .854 (76-13) career winning percentage in singles. Regardless of the outcome in her NCAA team and individual championship matches, she will end her career with the highest winning percentage in school history, as she will obliterate the current school record of .765 (91-28) held by Morgan Frank (2008-11).
