Texas A&M Slips to Tie for 13th After NCAA West Regional Second Round

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 27 Texas A&M slipped three positions into a tie for 13th place following the second round of the NCAA West regional at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Ca.

Junior Katerina Ruzickova provided a late spark for the Aggies with a birdie on her 16th and 17th holes of the day. The Ostrava, Czech Republic native, lead the Aggies on Friday with a one-under par 70 to move into a tie for 17th place. On the Day Ruzickova finished with four birdies and a team-leading 11 pars.

“Kat was awesome all day today,” head coach Trelle McCombs said. “she had a rough start with two bogeys, but never got rattled. I am really proud of how she kept her composure throughout the round. I knew it was just a matter of time before she would put together a good round for this team.”

A&M (300-302) settled into a tie for 13th place following 36-holes with just one day remaining in its attempt to grab a National Championship place. The top eight teams following tomorrow’s round will move on to the National Championship in Athens, Ga. set to begin May 21.

“We did not play very well today with the number of double bogeys we carded today,” McCombs added. “If we just find a way to settle for a bogey instead of the doubles we had today we would be right in the thick of things. After today’s round we will have to go out tomorrow and put up a good number tomorrow to put us in contention to advance.”

No. 12 Purdue (291-286) fired off the third-best round of the day at two-over par to move into a tie for the tournament lead with first round leader No. 7 Vanderbilt (289-288), host-Stanford (301-284) shot the best round of the day at even par. Following the Boilermakers and Commodores are No. 1 Southern California (290-289), No. 36 South Carolina (296-285), No. 14 Stanford, No. 19 Baylor (295-291), No. 40 Oregon (292-297), No. 18 Georgia (296-299), Kent State (302-294) and No. 6 Arizona (300-298) to round out the top-10.

Just outside of the top-10 are No. 37 Ohio State (301-299) and No. 30 LSU (301-300) in 11th and 12th place respectively.  No. 25 Pepperdine (303-299), A&M, San Jose State (301-304), No. 43 UNLV (310-296), No. 48 California (297-312), No. 32 Denver (299-312), Harvard (309-305), No. 49 Florida State to reside within the top-20 on the leaderboard. Miami (307-312), North Dakota State (309-315), Northern Arizona (307-318) and Long Island (322-324) complete the regional field.

Following Ruzickova for the Aggies are Chelsea Mocio (75-76) in a tie for 51st place and Susy Grunden (73-79) in a tie for 59th. Sarah Beth Davis carded identical 77’s in each of the first two rounds in California, Davis is currently tied for 72nd place. Rounding out the A&M lineup was Natalie Reeves (79-82) in 114th place.

Play resumes at the Stanford Golf Course Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. (CT), the Aggies will tee-off at 2:00 p.m. (CT) alongside Pepperdine and San Jose State at hole No. 1.
