COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M Aggies’ third baseman Hunter Melton was named the SEC Freshman of the Week the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Melton hit .500 (8-for-16) with two home runs on the week as the Aggies went 4-0. He recorded multiple hits in three of the four games on the week.
On Tuesday, he went 3-for-4 with a home run to help the Aggies snap a season-long five-game losing streak. In the 2-1 series opening win against Missouri, Melton scored the game-winning run and went 2-for-4 on the evening. On Saturday, he hit a home run in the Aggies 6-5 win. He capped the weekend sweep off by going 2-for-4 on Sunday.
Melton, who is hitting .294 since assuming the starting role at the hot corner 10 games ago, leads the A&M with four home runs on the season despite playing in just 18 games (16 starts).
The Corsicana, Texas-native became the third Aggie to earn the SEC Freshman of the Week honor this season. Jonathan Moroney garnered the recognition on March 4 and Matt Kent picked up the accolade on March 25.
