Sequestration Results in CSISD Headstart Cuts

Reduced federal funding from sequestration is taking a bite out of the Headstart and Early Headstart programs in College Station.

CSISD’s Director of Early Education, Sharon Jackson, says they will be able to continue teaching nearly 300 children and keep all their employees.

Among the cuts to save $99,000 dollars is eliminating a 20 day summer instruction program and end training to save the salary costs of providing substitute teachers.

Sharon Jackson visits with WTAW’s Bill Oliver.

From the CSISD website, decisions made with the input of the Headstart family council were:

The following areas will not be reduced:

•Funded enrollment will remain at 296 students
•Program staff
•Family support/engagement opportunities
•Health support
•Student data management and tracking system
•Child assessment instrument and analysis tools

The plan includes the following reductions:

•Elimination of summer school
•Food and snacks
•Staff training
•Supplies
•Provided child care for parent trainings
•Equipment improvement
•Number of field trips
