Aggies Finish 11th at SEC Championships

HOOVER, Ala. – No. 23 Texas A&M finished in 11th place at the SEC Women’s Golf Championships, played at the Greystone Golf & Country Club – Founders Course .

The Aggies (318-309-307) shot lower and lower with each consecutive round at the championship, but could not overcome the sluggish start Friday finishing just one stroke out of 10th place.

“We got better every day this weekend,” head coach Trelle McCombs said. “We could have had a better fourth score a couple times this week, but this field is so tough that if you do not capitalize on your opportunities climbing the leaderboard is impossible.”

No. 2 Alabama (304-293-302) claimed the SEC Championship by 14 strokes on Sunday. No. 18 Georgia (306-305-302), No. 40 South Carolina (306-309-303), No. 8 Vanderbilt (309-309-301) finished behind the Crimson Tide. No. 34 Kentucky (306-308-308) and Mississippi State (306-303-313) tied for fifth place after 72-holes with No. 6 Arkansas (313-308-313) and No. 31 LSU (303-311-309) just one stroke behind finishing in a tie for seventh.

No. 32 Tennessee (312-309-308), No. 43 Auburn (321-306-306), A&M, Mississippi (317-321-303), No. 7 Florida (315-318-319) and Missouri (312-321-322) completed the championship leaderboard.

Individually, the Aggies were led by Sarah Beth Davis’ tie for 23rd place. Davis (78-79-75) was the only member in maroon and white to shoot below 80 in every round for the weekend.

“Sarah really hung in there throughout the championship,” McCombs said. “I am proud of how Sarah played this week and to get a top-25 finish in this field is quite an accomplishment. She should be proud of the fight she showed in these adverse conditions.”

Chelsea Mocio (82-73-80) finished in a tie for 37th and Susy Grunden (80-81-76) finished the championship inside the top-50 tying for 47th place. Katerina Ruzickova (80-76-82) and Natalie Reeves (80-84-76) completed the A&M contingent in 51st and 54th respectively.

Up next for the Aggies will be the NCAA Regional selection show on Monday, April 29 at 8:00 p.m. (CT). A&M, once selected, will move on to regional play at one of three regional sites; Auburn University, University of Oklahoma and Stanford University will host the east, central and west regions respectively.

“We have our work cut out for us the next couple of weeks to get ready for regional play,” McCombs said. “Anytime you advance to regionals you will face a tough field and this year is no different. There are teams out there that really want it and we have to be one of those teams if we want to keep playing.”
